In Memory of
JACK, GEORGE JOHN

H/35339,3 Field Regt.
Royal Canadian Artillery
Lance Sergeant
who died age 48
on 11th July 1943

Remembered with honour
AGIRA WAR CEMETERY, SICILY

Son of George Phillip and Annie Jack; husband of Alice Irene Jack, of St. Vital, Manitoba.
Crushed by wheels of a gun when knocked off the truck towing the gun.

George left behind two daughters - Colleen age 13 and Gail age 5.  His wife Alice Irene  raised the girls alone.  They lived in Winnipeg until Colleen married and moved to Alberta.
When Gail married, her husband joined the RCAF and in 1966 was posted to 3 Wing Zweibrucken, Germany.
Soon after they left Canada word was received that Alice was terminally ill.  She traveled to Germany to spend her last days with her daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren.  She died in Zweibrucken in 1967.

This is a picture of George Jack in his WWI uniform. He joined the 100th Overseas Battalion on March 31 1916, was sent overseas in September and was transferred to the 1st CMRs in November of the same year. He served in Fance and Belgium and returned to Canada in December 1918. He was discharged in January 1919.

This is a photo taken at the army camp in England in November 1942 - on the back my father wrote "Nov 1942 - Stopped at the gate on our way to supper - me, Smith E. A. and BSM F.E. Grindley of MJaw" MJaw would be Moose Jaw Saskatchewan

This is a copy of the newspaper account of his death overseas which appeared in a Winnipeg Manitoba newspaper in mid August 1943 (which is when my mother was first advised of his death.

This is the write-up in the second local newspaper in Winnipeg Manitoba.

This is a photo of my four children at the Agira Cemetery in June 1968.
George Jack's grandchildren are Kathleen and Dawn in the back and Douglas and Sharon in front.
My husband was stationed in Germany with the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1966 to 1969 and we traveled to Sicily to see my father's grave. We are the only members of our family who have had the opportunity to do this.
